THE MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR EXTENDS THE TOLERANCE REGIME ON THE INTELLIGENT TACHOGRAPH TO 31 DECEMBER 2024
The digital tachograph, renamed "intelligent", came into force on 21 August 2023, so from this date, in fact, the new version of the instrument is mandatory on all newly registered industrial vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
For already registered vehicles, however, without prejudice to the obligation to replace the old with the new, the times for the change are a little longer and the legislation provides for two distinct time periods:
- The first is 31 December 2024, thanks to an extension granted by the Ministry of the Interior, which postpones the deadline within which all vehicles equipped with an analogue or digital tachograph (until 15 June 2019) carry out international transport weighing more than 3 .5 tons.
- The second bracket concerns 19 August 2025, when all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes equipped with a first generation intelligent tachograph will have to be equipped with a second generation one, but only for those operating in cross-border traffic.
Finally, a final stage is planned for 2026, the year in which all commercial vehicles with a maximum weight between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes will also have to be equipped with the new version of the tachograph.
In this column of ours we have already had the opportunity to talk about the functions of the digital tachograph, which compared to the analogue one has new control functions that go beyond the normal operations of recording working and operating times. The new devices, in fact, will also record border crossings via the European Union´s global satellite navigation system. And then the new tachograph will use satellite positioning and integrated maps to record border crossings and allow authorities to see how many trips the vehicle has made and which countries the driver has been to. It is, therefore, a more detailed control system to avoid unnecessary fraud. Non-compliant vehicles will be stopped and fined.
