THE UNIMOG OFF-ROAD CELEBRATES 75 YEARS
2021 is a year in which several anniversaries are celebrated in the world of automotive and commercial and industrial vehicles in general and one of these is the glorious anniversary of Unimog, the Mercedes off-road vehicle, which represents one of the most famous industrial vehicles in the world.
This year he turns 75 and it was, in fact, 1946 when Eng. Albert Friedrich of Daimler-Benz designed the Unimog in collaboration with the company Erhard & Söhne of Schwäbisch Gmünd. A fairly unusual collaboration, we will dare to say, because the company actually supplied ashtrays for cars and had no experience in the design and construction of whole cars. But despite this inexperience, a new vehicle was built which at first was conceived as a multi-purpose motorized machine intended for agriculture, but then this vehicle over the years became so important that it was used in every sector, because it reached a speed maximum speed of 50 km / h, which was double that of a normal agricultural tractor.
As we said, this year marks the 75th anniversary of the design, but we have to wait until 1949 to see the series production started with the first Unimog of only 25 HP: under the hood of the vehicle, 3.57 meters long, an engine was mounted fourcylinders with a displacement of 1.7 liters. 5,846 examples of this 25-horsepower model were produced.
Over the years, other models followed one another with an output of 80 HP and with diesel and petrol engines that literally sold like hot cakes during the economic miracle.
In more recent years, the modern Mercedes Unimog has two variants. The first is the U 4023 with a total permissible weight of 10.3 t while the second is the Unimog U 5023, with a total permissible weight of 14.3 t. The final two figures indicate respectively the power of 231 hp (170 kW), developed by a 5.1-liter four-cylinder engine.
With such impressive power, the Unimog is able to overcome climbs with fairly steep slopes capable of reaching the most disparate sites and covering the most rugged roads.
