FROM 1st SEPTEMBER 2020 LONGER CABINS
Europe has accustomed us in the past to legislate on anything from the mesh size of fishing nets to milk quotas and even on Nutella, where the European Parliament decided in 2018 not to oblige producers to apply the wording on labels "Without palm oil". We are not surprised, therefore, that the European institutions have also decided on the adoption of longer truck cabins than the normal conditions, which we are used to. In this case, however, this is a correct and pertinent decision, because having a cabin with a more prominent and aerodynamic front with the same space for the goods, means an overall increase in length between 80 and 90 cm, thus ensuring a better visibility towards the most vulnerable users. The extension of the cabin, even if it cannot be used to extend the space for the load, would, however, improve driver comfort by optimizing space for the bed, the bathroom and the shower cabin.
The possibility for manufacturers to introduce them starts on September 1st 2020 and the European Council has estimated a reduction of 500 deaths a year among pedestrians and cyclists involved in accidents with trucks and a 10% decrease in consumption. This measure was also taken with a view to reducing CO2 emissions according to the limits established by law.
To date, however, the homologation requirements have not yet been set, so it is quite difficult for us to be ready with the new cabins from September 2020.
