MANDATORY ADAS SYSTEM SINCE 2022

MANDATORY ADAS SYSTEM SINCE 2022
The Parliament and the European Council have decided that from May 2022 for all newly registered trucks the ADAS (advance driver assistance system) system will be mandatory, a technological tool that monitors the driver´s attention threshold thanks to a device that detects obstacles in movement during reverse maneuvers.
According to the latest Acea data, there are just over 39 million commercial vehicles in Europe with an average age of 11, so they are not equipped with state-of-the-art safety systems with a significant risk of causing a traffic accident ; on the other hand, having this tool supplied would make it possible to reduce road deaths in Europe by 20%, because the ADAS is able to read the road signs and operate on the basis of the navigator´s maps, marking the overcoming of the driver´s speed limits.
To incentivize the endowment of these technological tools even on older trucks, it could be the possibility of applying advantageous tax cuts, which could affect 480,000 trucks and 173,000 trucks, especially in Italy, many of which have many years and kilometers behind them with a considerable propensity to cause traffic accidents, which could be avoided by a device that calls the driver´s attention within two seconds; in fact, 94% of accidents are caused by human error and 80% of accidents are due to driver distraction three seconds before impact. Furthermore, the Adas also include the obligation for manufacturers to facilitate the installation of systems capable of blocking the vehicle if the detected alcoholic strength exceeds the legal limits.
Finally, the deadline of November 2025 is expected for the mandatory installation of devices to improve the visibility of cyclists and pedestrians on the road by drivers of heavy vehicles through a direct visual system that passes through front and rear detection systems.
