INTERMODAL TRANSPORT: OPPORTUNITIES AND ADVANTAGES

INTERMODAL TRANSPORT: OPPORTUNITIES AND ADVANTAGES
Intermodal transport is a method of transporting goods that sees the synergy between three different means of transport that are ships, trucks or trains.
A decree issued by the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport of 6 April 2017, which implemented a community directive, explains in legal terms what precisely means intermodal transport, distinguishing it from combined transport.
According to the ministerial act, in order to define itself as truly intermodal, transport must take place by rail or by sea for at least one kilometer kilometers as the crow flies, while the initial or final road transport must not exceed 150 kilometers. These limits are important for correctly establishing the relative benefits on costs and dimensions.
Another characteristic and assumption of this type of transport is that the goods are placed at the factory or at the warehouse of a forwarder in a specific container from where it is not removed until the final destination is reached.
Beyond purely juridical dissertations, intermodal transport has enormous opportunities and advantages, because it guarantees a lower risk of damage to the contents, a lower cost of transhipment and often also guarantees greater speed in carrying out transport. Another advantage is to drastically reduce consumption and emissions with very positive consequences for the environment.
This type of transport is one of the priorities that the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport intends to develop, giving enormous benefits to our economy, considering that about 70% of Italian import-export passes through the Alps, where it is made an organization that particularly points to improving the rail and motorway network is necessary.
