Biofuels: the new frontier of road haulage

Biofuels: the new frontier of road haulage
Every year in Italy, 160 million tons of agri-food waste are produced, unfortunately most of it is wasted. Not everyone knows, however, that from these substances it is possible to obtain paper, plastics, cosmetics, lubricants, solvents and even fuels with great benefit to the environment and to the total detriment of pollution.
Biomethane, unlike the gas extracted from fossil fuels, is derived from biogas, which in turn is obtained from organic substances with a bacterial fermentation process in the absence of oxygen. In order to be clearer, foodstuffs are not used in themselves, but leftovers from fruit and poultry or the remains of meat and fish processing.
Biofuels, above all, have a considerable use in road transport and heavy vehicles manufacturers have already put into the market trucks that circulate with organic products; in fact, the Scania company, world leader in the use of bio fuels, now offers the widest range of engines, which offer the same energy efficiency as a standard diesel engine. Today, about forty Scania trucks circulate with this fuel and have come to diversify fleets of transporters, such as Asko, Norway´s largest food distributor. The fuel that these vehicles use, is extracted from the marc, which is a residue generated by pressing the grapes.
Scania said that thanks to the use of this fuel it has been able to reduce by at least 85% of the greenhouse gas emissions, so these vehicles are considered the best friends of the environment. In Sweden many "green" trucks circulate, which are used for waste collection, construction and transport of goods, but these vehicles are also widely used in other European countries such as Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
Faced with this offensive of Scania, the other companies are not looking like the Man Latin America, which launched its first trucks while circulating with biodiesel and diesel and Renault that has introduced 3 models of its Euro 6 range on the market.
