Crisis in the road transport sector

Crisis in the road transport sector
The Italian road haulage sector is literally on its knees, burdened by an expense account that grows by over 1.2 billion euros each year. It is a fact that emerges from a study of United Transport, which is a trade association that brings together road haulage companies in Italy. The study in question concerns the analysis of the individual cost items and unfortunately they grow exponentially due to the very uncertain times on the payment of the transport services rendered by the companies, which must often resort to the help of a lawyer for the collection coactivating their claims.
It is a fairly worrying situation because each industrial vehicle that carries goods for third parties costs the company as much as 4,092 euros a year, sum derived from the following cost items:
- Diesel (+ 6% compared to 2017);
- Motorway tolls (+ 2.74%);
- Strong competition from Eastern European transport companies operating in Italy with much lower costs than Italian companies;
- Confused and inconclusive regulatory system;
- Access to credit that is the most influential item because the overhead operating expenses are not hedged in real time as on average they spend about 90 days from the issuance of the invoice to collect the due.
All these factors led to a 38.1% drop in road freight transport, from 24.9 tonnes of goods transported per inhabitant to 15.4 tonnes per inhabitant in 2015.
Despite these discomforting numbers, however, the road haulage system continues to be in Italy by far the most used mode for the transport of goods.
